Aug. 30 -- At the August 30th Board of Supervisors meeting the board issued a proclamation formally recognizing September as National Preparedness Month in Riverside County.
National Preparedness Month was established on the first anniversary of 9/11 and occurs annually in September to encourage residents across the United States to prepare their homes, businesses, and neighborhoods for any type of emergency, including fires, floods, pandemic and an array of natural and human-caused disasters.
The National Preparedness Month theme for 2022 is "A Lasting Legacy; The life you've built is worth protecting." That’s why we encourage everyone to prepare for disasters to create a lasting legacy for you and your family.
Being prepared for emergencies is critical to your resilience. National Preparedness Month is a time to take action and review your preparedness for emergencies like fires, floods, terrorism, earthquakes and even pandemic.
All it takes is four simple steps -- Have a Plan, Make a kit, Get Informed and Get Involved.
Have a Plan – we can’t bury our heads in the sand and ignore that disasters like, fires, floods and earthquakes happen every year. Apply some of what you’ve learned from the COVID pandemic to a plan for your family.
Make a kit – we’ve all seen what happens when people think supplies are going to run out. Have enough supplies to sustain you and your family for 7-10 days.
Get Informed – know where to get good, valid information for your local area. Part of being informed includes signing up for the local alerting system, Alert RivCo at RivCoReady.org/AlertRivCo.
Get involved – During many emergencies there is often a need for volunteers. Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training teaches you how to help your family and your community during disasters. You can find more information and a free CERT class near you at, RivCoCERT.org. CERT is just one of many programs that will help you help your community during times of need.
