Cities Readiness Initiative

EMD developed a Strategic National Stockpile (SNS) and Mass Prophylaxis Plan to protect the public in the event of a public health emergency, i.e., a terrorist attack, flu outbreak or natural disaster. Our ability to collaboratively plan and respond to public health emergencies is a direct result of the strong partnerships developed with local, state and federal partners.

Our plan addresses the need to request, receive, distribute and dispense antibiotics and other life-saving medical supplies to the entire identified population within 48 hours. EMD and RUHS - Public Health are well-prepared to receive and distribute SNS medical countermeasures. We have consistently received the highest marks from the state and federal government for our planning efforts.

The SNS and Mass Prophylaxis Plan is based on guidance from the CDC's Strategic National Stockpile program. Find out more information on the national program here or read the SNS frequently asked questions. For a general overview of the Cities Readiness Initiative from the CDC, click here.

Points of Dispensing (POD) Sites

A POD site provides medications (prophylaxis) or vaccinations to protect the general population from biological threats or epidemics. Routine medical care is not provided in a POD. The sole purpose of a POD is to quickly distribute preventive medication to large numbers of people during a public health emergency to prevent illness. In the event of a community disease outbreak or emergency, a POD site might be one tool used to fight the spread of disease.

Public POD Information

Closed PODs

In addition to Public PODs managed by the EMD, other communities can receive medications or vaccines through Closed PODs, which are operated by businesses and organizations. Closed PODs are not open to the general public. Closed PODs receive medication from EMD to distribute to employees, clientele, and their immediate families.
