Preparing Children & Teens
Children may be especially vulnerable during a disaster. For families with children, having a plan is a critical element in their disaster readiness. There are numerous considerations that should be taken into account when preparing your family and children for a disaster. One important element is to communicate with children about why you are preparing, what they may expect during a disaster and what role they will play. Effective communication can remove some uncertainty and anxiety, even in young children. Start by developing a plan, and if appropriate, include children in the process. For tips on how to develop a plan, please visit: www.ready.gov/plan.
Here are some considerations especially for children:
- Formula or other special dietary considerations
- Diapers
- Bottles
- Powdered milk
- Medications
- Moist towelettes
- Diaper rash ointment
- Toys/comfort items
