February 14, 2022
In addition to Overdose Surveillance, EMD-REMSA also helps lead the initiative focused on Overdose Prevention through education and resiliency. This initiative led by EMS Specialist, Sean Hakam, is currently focused on Trauma Informed Care (TIC). First responders are routinely exposed to traumatic events in their line of work. TIC training broadens understanding of what is meant by trauma and invites individuals and organizations to recognize the impact of traumatic experiences on psycho-social wellbeing. First Responders are trained on recognizing the signs and symptoms of trauma, pathways to recovery, and how to respond by utilizing this knowledge in policies, procedures and practices. Training is voluntary and provided on-site by Clinical Psychologist, Dr. Tammy McCoy who specializes in the unique stressors experienced by first responders. Seven (7) trainings have been provided during this quarter to approximately 50 first responders with additional trainings planned through September 2021.
