The Riverside County Board of Supervisors issued a proclamation during their regularly scheduled meeting on Sept. 12 in honor of National Preparedness Month.

Whereas, National Preparedness Month, occurring annually in September since 9/11, creates an ideal opportunity for every resident of Riverside County, California, to join citizens across the United States in preparing their homes, businesses, and communities for any type of emergency, including natural disasters and potential terrorist attacks; and

Whereas, the Federal Emergency Management Agency announced the 2017 National Preparedness Month theme of “Disasters Don’t Plan Ahead. You Can,” and

Whereas, planning now, before a disaster, is the best way to improve community recovery from disasters; and

Whereas, when individuals take responsibility for preparing their families and their communities, the chance of survival and return to normalcy following a disaster is greatly increased; and

Whereas, the County Emergency Management Department partners with federal, state, local, tribal, territorial, private, and volunteer agencies to educate individuals on local hazards and how to prepare for them; and

Whereas, the County Emergency Management Department informs individuals on how to take action, through its RivCo Ready public education campaign, and volunteer programs, such as Community Emergency Response Team and Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service; and

Whereas, all residents of Riverside County, California, are urged to plan ahead for disasters and encourage their family and their friends to also do so by participating in neighborhood preparedness activities, registering their contact information in the Alert RivCo mass notification system, and visiting the County’s preparedness campaign website at: RivCoReady.org for essential preparedness tips and information; and

Therefore, be it resolved that the Board of Supervisors of the County of Riverside, State of California, in a regular session assembled on September 12, 2017, hereby proclaims September 2017 as National Preparedness Month, and calls on all government agencies, private organizations, and the people and businesses of Riverside County to develop their own emergency preparedness plan, and work together toward creating a stronger, more resilient community.
